Certificate Program FAQ

  • Do you offer a certification program?
No. We do have a highly regarded certificate program.

  • What certificates does AMWA offer?
AMWA currently offers an Essential Skills certificate and the following specialty certificates: Business, Composition and Publication, Concepts in Science and Medicine, and Regulatory and Research. Advanced specialty certificates will be offered in the future.

  • How can I earn a certificate?
You must enroll in a certificate program and complete 8 workshops designated for that certificate, 1 of which must be the associated ethics workshop.

  • Do you have online courses?
No, we do not offer any workshops online. Our workshops are held at AMWA's annual conferences and at chapter conferences, and some workshops are available through self-study modules.

  • Can I complete my certificate through the self-study workshops?
No, but you can currently earn 7 Essential Skills credits by successfully completing the 6 self-study workshops. There are currently no self-study workshops for specialty certificates.

  • How do I obtain the self-study workshops and earn credits toward a certificate?
You need to purchase the self-study workshop, enroll in the Essential Skills certificate program, complete the final examination, and mail it to the AMWA office. The examination is pass/fail; your completed examination will be scored, and you will be notified of the results. To pass, you must score 85% or better on the test. If you do not pass, there is an option to retest.

  • How long does it take to earn a certificate?
The length of time it takes to complete a certificate depends on how quickly you want to complete it. You can complete it in 1 year if you take applicable workshops at chapter conferences and/or the annual conference and complete self-study modules. You can take up to 6 years to complete your certificate, as the enrollment is for 6 years.

  • How much does it cost to earn a certificate?
That depends on when and where you attend workshops. There is the initial cost of the certificate enrollment, which is $150 for AMWA members, $275 for nonmembers. The cost of each self-study module is $159 for members and $250 for nonmembers. The current cost for a certificate-credit workshop at an annual conference is $95 for members and $195 for nonmembers. AMWA chapters also hold conferences at which workshops are offered. The Chapter Conference Schedule is located on the AMWA Web site. Each listing on the schedule includes the name and e-mail address of a contact person who can provide the per-workshop cost for that chapter conference.

  • After I complete the 8 workshop credits needed for the certificate, how do I get my certificate?
AMWA headquarters will automatically mail your certificate to you once you have completed the certificate requirements.
